I Really Hate The Gym

by Paul | Aug 6, 2009 | Exercise Log, Thoughts | 4 comments

The next big step for me on my path to a healthy lifestyle is going to have to be the gym. And not the gym in the way I used to go as a teenager, where I went, lifted enough weight to make me feel good about myself, maybe played alittle basketball, and then left. No, in order to really get myself to the point I want, I’m going to have to do the thing I hate most – sustained cardio.

I took the first step on that path after work today. I’d intended for a 30 minute minimum to start, but I forgot my headphones at home, and without music it seemed like the time just slowed to a crawl. 20 minutes was long enough to break a decent sweat though, so it wasn’t completely wasted time.

20 minutes is 20 minutes. Keep it up. This will probably help those numbers fall, kicking your metabolism into high gear. Rock on!

By the way we found the most amazing fettucine alfredo at this delicious italian restaurant in easton with dad after you left. Just be thankful you missed it because it would probably take 5 milkshakes to equal one dish of that.

I’m really glad I wasn’t around to find that!

Glad to know there’s still more cool stuff (ie. food) to find in Easton though. I miss that Purple Cow ice cream already.

That initial push to get myself to the gym was so hard – I’ve never been much of a gym person either. It took me almost three months of having a membership before I got there consistently. I have to say though, now that I’ve made it a 5-days-a-week habit I actually look forward to going. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel – I actually stopped mainlining coffee because I have so much more energy.

One thing that helped a lot was doing a different cardio machine every day for the first couple of weeks. It was nice to shake things up, and it also let me see what I enjoyed and what felt boring. Picking machines you can challenge yourself on without feeling like you’re stuck in a monotonous cycle can help motivate you to stick with the gym.

Also – I can completely sympathize with the no music. My headphones died a few days ago and I feel like every second is agony without them. I’m so much more conscious of the time, and having to push myself to the end instead of being surprised when it’s arrived.

Good luck – keep on keeping on. 🙂
