This chart is updated every day with my current weigh-in. My actual weight is determined by a mathematical formula designed to account for random variations in weight from day to day. I started at 325.6 lbs, and I currently weigh 284.6, for a total loss of 41 lbs in 65 weeks.

3.7 lbs in 2 weeks as of today is really fantastic!!!! Keep takin it one day at a time cause 3.7 will soon be 5 which will soon be 10 which will soon be 15 and it will really start to show and you will just keep seeing those numbers add up while you reach your goal! Awesome!!

I think its cool, too that you have the pounds by increments… like you were just at 4 and now its 4.3 and by itself, .03 of a lb doesnt sound like much, but when the numbers just keep rising its really inspiring!

Keep it up man, you’ll get there. One thing I’ll say is that if you can start making food at home you’ll take in fewer calories by a fairly dramatic margin. The thing that first kept me from cooking when I was in college was that I didn’t like anything that I ate relative to what I could get from restaurants, and add the ease factor of just driving through, and I my choice was made.

I started cooking more in grad school simply because I had very few options and no car, so it was cook or starve :P , but, the trick is to find things that are both easy/fast to prepare, and that you enjoy eating. Even if you only eat dinner at home 2x a week, thats a great start. It will save money, and it will tend to contain dramatically fewer calories. Another trick to this is that you can buy food from the supermarket for several dinners in one shopping trip, so that when you are leaving work later in the week, and can’t stand the idea of going to the store, you won’t have to.

Some of my favorite things to make are:
-Baked fish of various varieties (though I think you may not be a fish guy) along with a baked potato.
-Pasta with a meat sauce or even chicken (very easy to sautee in some olive oil and garlic).
-Teriyaki chicken and rice (get a rice cooker for $30 and go nuts, plus you can bake the chicken in the sauce for an insanely easy preparation).
-Tacos (made with ground turkey; I made these for you in boston one time and I think you liked them).
-Stir fry, which includes things like beef/broccoli for instance. Stir frys are really easy in general and only take a little practice to learn, and you can easily make enough for 2 or more dinners.

After a while you’ll start to lose interest in fast food type stuff because it just won’t taste as good. And, you won’t want to spend the money on the stuff besides.

Keep up the good work dude,
    -S

    5 lbs Paul thats AWESOME!!!!!!

Good call Steve, eating out is so deceptive in the way they sell you the experience. Once you get a few recipes down, it will be easier, quicker, and more convenient (and obviously cheaper) to eat at home. Plus, the thing I really like best about cooking is the control over what ingredients I use, not only in their quality but in tailoring them to my precise liking. Just start with one meal a week. Something simple, maybe make enough for 2 meals even (and hope its good enough to eat twice) and dont get discouraged. I am sure anyone with the last name Thomas does not need to be reminded of my culinary beginnings….. a lot of trial and error goes into learning to cook. Just get a recipe to start. And in case you were wondering, jello mix plus eggs, flour, and chocolate sauce does NOT make a good cake.

I’m trying to set up a similar system as you, for similar reasons. I’m a programmer, and it’s too easy to sit in the cube, stare at the walls, and forget your goals and eat more pizza.

So I’m trying to add a “widget” to my wordpress blog that tracks my weight loss (or gain, but it better not be gain, right?). I’ve hacked the widget to show a correctly-proportioned image.

But what I’d like to show is the other data you have here, specifically your “vital stats” and “weight lost” boxes. Any pointers? (The image was brain-dead easy, but I’m not otherwise wise in the ways of WordPress).

Sure thing. I’m not much of a WordPress guru either, but I know a decent amount of PHP, so I’ve been playing to my strengths. I grabbed the Exec-PHP plugin, which allows for the execution of PHP in the free-form Text widgets, and I just wrote the code myself.

Formula’s for BMI calculation are available online, and the rest is just averaging or pulling values out of the Hacker’s Diet plugin table.

It’s sloppy, but it works. If you want specifics on the code I’m using, email me – Paul (at) mywastedlife.com. I’ll help however I can.

    DOUBLE DIGITS, DAWG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep it up man, thats AWESOME! I know there is still a long road ahead of you, but 10 lbs is really something….. imagine if the average person GAINED 10 pounds… it would make a difference! 10 pounds is a lot! I am so proud of you!

Yeah. I’ve still a long way to go, but I’m feeling the difference now. Even though it’s only about 3% of my bodyweight, dropping 10 pounds makes me feel alot better physically. I even had to tighten my belt a notch the other day. Now that’s positive reinforcement. :)

    Hi Paul,

Congrats on your progress! I’ve been using the Hacker’s Diet plugin myself, and it’s been great for me, so keep it up!

I actually found your page when checking out the plugin homepage, and I love this progress page of yours! Would you mind sharing the code for it? Some friends and family have been asking me about my diet, and I would like to have an easy way for all of us to share our progress with each other, since the plugin doesn’t have front-end support.

    Thanks!

I’ve been asked for that info a few times now, so I put a page together giving the specifics of how I accomplished what I’ve got going on here:

      http://mywastedlife.com/hacking-the-hackers-diet/

Lemme know if that helps, or if there’s other info I can provide.

    Hi Paul,
Congrats on your weight loss. You are doing a great job. A couple of things that I noticed that might help you (in addition to cooking at home) are to make sure you eat breakfast everyday and to include more fruits and vegetables. Both of these suggestions could help you cut calories later in the day by keeping you fuller for longer time. Ideally, you could throw in a couple of snacks during the day too. (These are things you can try as you get closer to your goal. Sometimes shaking things up a bit helps if your weight loss slows down.)
Best of luck to you on the rest your journey!
